The First Seminar for Nabataean Studies (SNS)

The First Seminar for Nabataean Studies will be held Sunday and Monday, 19–20 August 2007, in the main theatre of the College of Archaeology, Tourism and Hotel Management in Wadi Mousa. The seminar program is available as download in the PDF format.

The Organizing Committee of the First Seminar for Nabataean Studies (SNS) invites all scholars interested in Nabataean studies to participate in the 1st annual seminar on Nabataean studies, which is organized by the Nabataean Centre for Archaeological Studies at al-Hussein Bin Talal University, Petra. It will be held at the College of Archaeology, Tourism and Hotel Management, Petra.

This seminar will be held annually for the presentation of the latest archaeological discoveries in Nabataea. It will introduce research work conducted in various archaeological fields. The seminar welcomes submissions from archaeologists, historians, graduate students, and those engaged in the study of Nabataean sites.

Papers should focus on new archaeological discoveries in Nabataea and should not be published elsewhere. All papers presented at the Seminar will be published in the Proceedings of the Seminar for Nabataean Studies. These proceedings will include new researches on Nabataean Archaeology and will report and document new discoveries in the area in a wide range of disciplines. It will be edited by an editorial board.

We are anticipating sessions of the Seminar on the following general themes:

The official languages of the seminar are English and Arabic.

Persons who want to participate in this gathering should send abstracts of their papers to Dr. Zeyad al-Salameen. Each abstract should include a summary of the topic and a one-page resume (CV) of the participant. The deadline for abstracts is June 15, 2007. The deadline for receiving the full version of the presented paper is December 15, 2007.

The Organizing Committee will establish the time and place in which each paper will be read, and will include it in the official programme. The time alloted to each participant will be 15 minutes maximum, in order to allow debate to take place.

Papers should be presented by their authors. Should their authors be absent, the papers will not be presented. References should be cited using the «Harvard» system and should be included in the text, rather than consigned to notes. A list of references containing all the works cited in the text should appear at the end of the paper.

Local transportation as well as meals will be provided. Participants from outside Jordan should arrange their own international travel expenses. Please note that al-Hussein Bin Talal University will not provide for the accommodation of the participants. The Organizing Committee will try to arrange for special discounts at some hotels.

Yours sincerely, The Organizing Committee, Dr. Zeyad al-Salameen, Dr. Saad Twaissi, Dr. Mansour Shqairat.

URGENT UPDATE to the 10th International Conference on the History and Archaeology of Jordan

As we were working on the ICHAJ conference while in Washington, D.C. last month, we discovered that, according to our records, many of you are not currently listed as planning to participate, perhaps some because of communication glitches. Thus, we are communicating several things about the conference:

First, while many of you have already submitted your abstracts (including Jordanians who had an earlier deadline), for planning purposes we absolutely have to know by 15 DECEMBER whether you plan to attend the conference. If so (and if you have not already submitted a title and abstract), email your intentions and, for those applying to present, a title and abstract (250 words) to acor@go.com.jo as soon as possible. The vetting process and notification should be completed by the end of January.

Second, presentation categories include traditional papers and either static or electronic displays which should fit within the themes of «Crossing Jordan» or «Cultural Heritage Preservation». Excavation reports are also acceptable, especially those which connect with these themes and report on research carried out since the last ICHAJ conference three years ago.

Third, for clarification, we also want to explain the categories of conference attendees and the guidelines for coverage of expenses:

1. Conference Participants: Lecture Presenters and Display (static or electronic) Presenters

2. General Attendees

Fourth, ICHAJ now has a website (see below) which should be up and running by mid-December. The website will include, among other things, information on the conference, registration forms and encryption capacity for credit-card payments.

CVRA AQVARVM IN JORDANIA – 13th International Congress on the History of Water Management and Hydraulic Engineering in the Mediterranean Region

Petra / Amman, 31 March – 9 April 2007

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen: The DWhG and Mr. Ueli Bellwald invited you already in Ephesus for the congress «Cura Aquarum in Jordania», which was envisaged for October 2006. However, at that time we were not aware that at this date Ramadan, the holy fast-month for Muslims, will still be. Therefore friends strongly recommended to postpone the congress. Due to this reason we shifted the date to the week before eastern 2007 or more precisely to March 31st to April 9th. This date has the advantage that one more day will be available for the congress, because Easter Monday is a holiday in most of the European countries. Furthermore administrative problems and the blasts in Amman caused a delay of this invitation. We hope for your understanding. However, meanwhile the problems are solved and Mr. Ueli Bellwald, Dr. Jutta Häser, Dr. Fawwaz Al-Khraysheh and Mr. Wolfram Such would like to officially invite you for the congress.

Program: The envisaged program you find attached. This Mr. Bellwald has carefully developed and checked. His very convincing idea is to show you the ancient and modern water management problems and projects in Jordan.

Accomodation: It is planned to stay in Amman in a simple but clean hotel near the old center of Amman. In Petra we’ll stay in the Taybet hotel, where the lectures will be held, and most probably in another excellent hotel, depending on the number of participants. In case you intend to stay longer in Jordan please inform us . We try to help you in finding a respective accommodation.

Lectures: The lectures given at Petra should be held under the headline «Water and it’s use in history under arid and semi-arid conditions of the Near East». The number of oral presentations should not exceed 18. Please submit proposals of your contribution together with an abstract (not exceeding 1 page). The responsible board will then select those for the programme, which should be presented orally.

Publication: The orally presented lectures and also the others will be accepted as written contributions as well as those which deal with ancient waterworks, but not in the Near East and published in the proceedings of the congress.

Poster: Furthermore a poster presentation is possible on request. The posters are also to be published with additional explanations.

Leadership: Mr. Bellwald, the chief of the Swiss Siq-project in Petra, will be in charge of the excursion programme and local organisation. He will be supported by Mrs. Wendy Botham, the American manager of Petra Moon travel agency, with whom we collaborated excellently already many times in the past. The coordination of the scientific programme is chaired by Mr. Fahlbusch, whilst Mr. Ohlig will again be responsible for the edition of the publication.

Costs: Based on the actual exchange rates the fees for the participation at the congress will be 700.– € (650.– € for members of DWhG). This includes accommodation (twin-rooms), allmeals, transfer from and to the airport in Amman, excursions by bus, entrance fees, and fees for a group visa. Scientists who cannot afford the participation fees are kindly requested to contact Mr. Fahlbusch. A very small budget for support will hopefully be available.

Registration: People, who are interested in participation at the congress should send a respective letter/mail latest by the end of May 2006. Registration is only valid after a downpayment of 100.– €, which will not be recharged, when not participating. The money should be transferred to the account of DWhG at Kreissparkasse Koeln (Account-Nr. 120 7679, BLZ 386 500 00 (International: IBAN-Nr: DE 57 3865 0000 0001 2076 79, SWIFT-BIC.: WELADED1SGB).

Please send your letter/mail to:

In case you’ve any questions please contact:

Travel to Jordan: The flight to Jordan is to be organised by each participant himself. However we requested a group flight to be organized by Hapag Lloyd travel agency Lübeck. In case somebody will participate in the group flight he is kindly requested to contact Mrs Anders under the following adress:

We are looking forward to a hopefully excellent congress and a splendid meeting with old acquaintances and friends. On behalf of the organisation committee:

Ueli Bellwald, Dr. Jutta Häser, Dr. Fawwaz Al-Khraysheh, Wolfram Such
